Downtown Culver City

March 16, 2009

Sunday, I was invited to the Culver Hotel in downtown Culver City in the middle of the day.  If you have not been to downtown Culver City now is the time to go.  When the matinee at the Kirk Douglas Theatre lets out there is a lot of hustle and bustle.  Attendees are milling around trying to decide which restaurant to choose.  And there are numerous restaurants with outdoor seating that line Culver and Washington Boulevard.  Aside from the Kirk Douglas Theatre which used to be the old Culver Theater there is the Ivy Substation, where the Actors’ Gang Ensemble is the resident company.  .Media Park is next to the Substation and there is a Trader Joes across the street.

The Historic Culver Hotel is known as the hotel that hosted the Munchkins during the filming of “The Wizard of Oz”.  MGM Studios used to be up the street, but it is now owned by Sony.  It is a lovely “sliver” building much like the Flatiron building in New York City, triangular in shape.  We had a corner of the lobby to ourselves and the kitchen set up a lovely appetizer table, cocktails were orderrd from the bar and a piano was played in the background.  The interior was very light and with very high ceilings.

Take a trip down the yellow brick road in Culver City.
